Controversial Events That Should Be Banned

Must read

1. Greyhound Racing

Greyhound Racing first started in 1912, during that time, hares were used to lure the greyhounds so that they chase them around the track, trying to capture the hare. Later, the British switched to a mechanical hare, but even then the dogs had to be provided some incentive to race. Live baiting is used where piglets, rabbits, and possums are used which the dogs chase during training. What is unfortunate is that the dogs kill them after catching them. Once the greyhound is six years old, they are euthanized as they can no longer race fast.

2. Fraternity & Sorority Initiations

When you join college one of the first major experiences that you will enjoy is becoming a pledge at a fraternity or sorority. But after joining, these new members have to learn the secret rules of the group. Hazing is probably the biggest secret, which is even banned in most countries. But what is surprising most is colleges and universities taken any step to prevent this because even the faculty staff was involved in this during their college days. Hazing can be as simple as pranks to something critical like criminal activities, involving physical harm and even death in extreme cases.

3. Running Of The Bulls

It started in the 14th century in Spain and was initially used to herd the bulls through the city by surprising them. With the passage of time, people began to show their bravery by running in front of the animals while they were charging, and many people were interested in these events. Thus, it was transformed into a ruthless competition. The Bulls have to endure a lot of stress during the race and are often killed due to cardiac attacks. The bulls are kept in the dark room before the race and then given the electrical shock to make them run. This event is not only harmful to bulls but also for those men who participate in it. Every year, around 100 people are killed or badly hurt by Bull Run.

4. Competitive Eating

Competitive eating began as a part of carnival freak shows, but following its immense popularity, it soon became an independent event. You would be shocked to know that people participating in these events train for months or sometimes even years to adjust their bodies to cope with the huge pressure of consuming such massive amounts of food in a short period. Most of them suffer from various diseases as a result. In fact, some have even died from choking. Another cause of death is water intoxication, when you drink too much water, causing dilution of electrolytes in the blood.

5. Auto Racing

Auto racing is one of the most popular sports nowadays, but it is dangerous as well. Racers can get killed, and it is harmful to the environment too, due to the massive amounts of carbon dioxide released during such races. These cars usually emit 3000 grams of carbon dioxide per mile, and if we want to reduce global warming shortly, this needs to be stopped. Spectators and crew members are also in danger during such races. Around 185 people were killed during these races for the last seven years.

6. Rodeos

Rodeos were used for herding cattle in the old days and gradually transformed into modern day competitions mainly in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Steer wrestling, bareback bronc riding, and roping is some of the main events one can witness at a rodeo. Various devices such as electric prods were used to torture animals during these events, although some strict laws have lessened animal abuse to an extent. 7. Public Executions

Public execution as a punishment has already been banned in several countries, but still in use in others. In the USA, prisoners charged with the death penalty are given a lethal injective while they are strapped in front of an audience. Many executions are even shown on television as well. Public execution is considered to be a sport in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and North Korea. While firing them is the most used method, the most gruesome way is stoning, where the prisoner is buried while his head and shoulders are only above the ground. Then the people surrounding him throw rocks at him till he finally dies from severe wounds. [adinserter block=”16″]

8. Bullfighting

Although most people believe that bullfighting is a competitive event, that isn’t true. It is an art form and is considered to be a tradition. The stadiums where the event takes place can house more than 50,000 people. The bullfighters also called Toreros, first come to the ring center, when the bull is released. The fighters used a red color cape to lure the ball towards them. As the bull charges by, he stabs it always, and towards the end, the bull is killed by a Matador, while its horns are cut off by a sword. Many people have criticized this since the bull is placed under immense pressure and finally has to die just for the sake of “traditional art.”
