You could literally do anything you want during this period of 70 days – you can play games, chat with your relatives and friends, read books etc. The only catch is that you have to stay in bed the entire duration; you can’t leave the bed even for a single moment.

Frankly speaking, this is a childhood dream for several people. After a tiring day of work, one often wonders how great it could be if he or she could sleep in bed for a long time, but unfortunately, we all have jobs and other responsibilities. So, for those people, this is similar to fulfilling a dream.

Next, comes the question – why conduct such a bizarre experiment?

The main reason why NASA thought about this is to find out the long term effects space can have on human beings. These experiments simulate the conditions a human being will probably face during an extendedduration of space travel.Lying down in bed all the time simulates travelling in zero gravity to an extent, since your muscles are in a completely relaxed position when you are sleeping.

This experiment will also help NASA research about the psychological effects caused during space travel, and also measure the atrophy of the muscle and atrophy of bone density occurring in this time period.

After this experiment is over, the volunteers would then be subjected to various exercises such as running on a treadmill. This will help them understand how fast human beings can regain their initial fitness levels after travelling in space for an extended duration.

There will be two study groups-

  • Exercising
  • Non-exercising.

The non-exercising group will just stay relaxed all the time, while the exercising group will be exercising using special equipment to maintain the “bed rest” position.

Both study groups can move normally within their rooms for the first few days – 13 days for non-exercising group and 21 for the exercising group.

Then they will be put through a series of tests which will be checking their fitness levels, including circulatory and respiratory systems during those 70 days.

The payment of $18,000 is subdivided into 15 parts i.e. $1200 per week. The test will continue for 70 days, but pre-tests and post-tests combined will take 15 weeks.

So should you do it? Well, if you are short of money and need it immediately, you shouldn’t hesitate at all. For others, you need to realise that lying on bed for 70 days can be extremely boring and can mentally make you weak. But keep in mind that in doing so you are helping mankind make significant progress in the field of space travel.
